Meyerson Lab News: Awards, Honors and Other Exciting Goings-On
Mar 2015: AACR Fellowship Award for Xiaoyang Zhang, Research Fellow
Xiaoyang Zhang is the recipient of the 2015-2016 John and Elizabeth Leonard Family Foundation Basic Cancer Research Fellowship from the American Association for Cancer Research. His research focus is on the role of loss-of-function mutations in the MGA gene in lung adenocarcinoma. Dr. Zhang also received a research grant from the Lung Cancer Research Foundation for this project in 2014-2015.
Mar 2015: Yoichiro Mitsuishi, Research Fellow, awarded IASLC Lung Cancer Fellowship Award
Dr. Mitsuishi was recently selected to receive a post-doctoral fellowship award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, for his project on identifying chemical compounds that will selectively kill tumors expressing abnormally high levels of a protein called NRF2, observed in 25-30% of lung cancer patients.
Mar 2015: Hugh Gannon, Research Fellow, receives NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from NIH
Hugh Gannon, Research Fellow, has received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship from the NIH for his research proposal focused on analyzing extraordinary responder cancer cell lines to uncover novel cancer dependencies. The award will run from March 2015 to February 2017.
Jan 2015: Angela Brooks, Research Fellow, awarded Damon Runyon-Dale F. Frey Award for Breakthrough Scientists
Angela Brooks, a Damon Runyon Fellow in the Meyerson laboratory from 2012-2015, and now faculty at UCSC, was awarded a Damon Runyon-Dale F Frey award for breakthrough scientists, one of just six Damon Runyon Fellows to be conferred this award. The Frey Award provides additional research support for exceptionally promising Damon Runyon Fellows who are expected to make groundbreaking contributions to cancer research during their scientific careers. Angela is interested in how somatic alterations in mRNA splicing factors and regulators causes cancer.
Oct 2014:Matthew Meyerson awarded ACS Research Professorship
Dr. Meyerson was the recipient of a prestigious Research Professor Award by the American Cancer Society, one of only two awarded each year, for sustained and seminal contributions to cancer research. The Award, effective January 2015 and continuing through 2019, will support the Meyerson laboratory's ongoing research programs that explore the genomic basis of the development and spread of lung cancer.
Sep 2014:Thomson Reuters names Matthew Meyerson 2nd most influential scientific mind worldwide, in 2014
On a list of the world's scientists with the greatest global research impact across all fields of science, as determined by citations of their research from 2002-2012 & 2012-2013, Matthew Meyerson ranked #2, testament to the Meyerson laboratory's pioneering role in unraveling the genetic basis of lung cancer.
